Moving from the UK to Malaysia: your checklist

The Malaysia-side essentials plus the UK-specific admin people forget. Tick it off as you go. Figures and rules are indicative for 2026 — confirm specifics before you rely on them. Full context in our moving-to-Malaysia-from-the-UK guide.

Rough timeline (3–6 months)

  • Months 1–2 — decide the visa, set a budget, shortlist areas
  • Months 2–4 — MM2H application + fixed deposit; open a bank account; secure property
  • Months 3–5 — book shipping, arrange pets, apply to schools, notify UK bodies
  • Months 5–6 — fly out, settle in, finalise the local account

The Malaysia side

  • Confirm your visa route (MM2H tier or DE Rantau)
  • Line up the MM2H fixed deposit
  • Open or pre-open a Malaysian bank account
  • Choose your area — rent first before buying
  • Arrange private health insurance before arrival
  • Apply to international schools early (if bringing children)
  • Book shipping; set up Wise / Revolut for bridging funds
  • Plan your first 30 days of accommodation

The UK side

  • Tell HMRC you're leaving (form P85); check tax residency
  • Notify your UK pension providers and the DWP
  • Understand the frozen UK State Pension before you go
  • Tell your bank and check non-resident account rules
  • Notify your council (council tax) and cancel utilities
  • Remove yourself from / update the electoral roll
  • Get UK documents FCDO-legalised (birth, marriage, police cert)
  • Arrange the DVS pet import permit, microchip and vaccinations
  • Get an International Driving Permit / plan licence conversion
  • Arrange a cross-border (UK-expat) tax adviser

Bringing family? A spouse and children join your MM2H application as dependents. See the UK MM2H guide and schools guide.
