Moving from the UK to Malaysia: your checklist

Rough timeline (3–6 months)
- Months 1–2 — decide the visa, set a budget, shortlist areas
- Months 2–4 — MM2H application + fixed deposit; open a bank account; secure property
- Months 3–5 — book shipping, arrange pets, apply to schools, notify UK bodies
- Months 5–6 — fly out, settle in, finalise the local account
The Malaysia side
- Confirm your visa route (MM2H tier or DE Rantau)
- Line up the MM2H fixed deposit
- Open or pre-open a Malaysian bank account
- Choose your area — rent first before buying
- Arrange private health insurance before arrival
- Apply to international schools early (if bringing children)
- Book shipping; set up Wise / Revolut for bridging funds
- Plan your first 30 days of accommodation
The UK side
- Tell HMRC you're leaving (form P85); check tax residency
- Notify your UK pension providers and the DWP
- Understand the frozen UK State Pension before you go
- Tell your bank and check non-resident account rules
- Notify your council (council tax) and cancel utilities
- Remove yourself from / update the electoral roll
- Get UK documents FCDO-legalised (birth, marriage, police cert)
- Arrange the DVS pet import permit, microchip and vaccinations
- Get an International Driving Permit / plan licence conversion
- Arrange a cross-border (UK-expat) tax adviser
