Malaysia visa pathways: which route fits you
MM2H gets the headlines, but it isn't the only — or always the best — way into Malaysia. Here's an honest comparison of the main long-stay options in 2026.

Start with the question, not the visa
The right visa depends on why you're moving. Retirees and investors usually want MM2H for its long horizon and residency optionality. Remote workers are often far better served by DE Rantau. People arriving with a job offer use an Employment Pass, and spouses of Malaysians use a long-term social visit pass.
Choosing the wrong route is the most common early mistake — typically over-committing to MM2H's fixed deposit when a cheaper, simpler visa would have done the job.
The main routes at a glance
| Visa | Best for | Duration | Work rights |
|---|---|---|---|
| MM2H | Retirees, investors, diaspora | 5–20 years | Platinum only |
| DE Rantau | Remote workers / nomads | 1 year (renewable) | Remote/abroad |
| Employment Pass | Those with a job offer | 1–5 years | Yes (sponsor) |
| LTSVP | Spouse of a Malaysian | Renewable | With endorsement |
| Student Pass | Enrolled students | Course length | Limited |
MM2H vs DE Rantau
If you earn your income remotely and want to test Malaysia for a year or two, DE Rantau has dramatically lower financial requirements than any MM2H tier and far less commitment. Where MM2H Gold asks for a RM 2,000,000 fixed deposit, DE Rantau's headline bar is a minimum annual income of around USD 24,000 (roughly USD 2,000 a month) for eligible remote workers — no deposit, no property purchase. MM2H earns its place only once you want a multi-year base, property rights, and family inclusion.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. Many people use DE Rantau to test Malaysia, then apply for MM2H once they're committed to a longer-term base. The two are separate applications.
Only the Platinum tier permits work, and only in approved sectors. For employment, an Employment Pass is the correct route.
