Editorial standards & press

We publish guidance people make real money and migration decisions on, so how we research matters as much as what we say. This page sets out our sourcing, how we keep figures current, our corrections policy — and how journalists and researchers can cite or quote us.

How we research

  • Primary sources first. MM2H figures track MOTAC’s framework; tax positions track LHDN; property data comes from transacted sources (NAPIC, Brickz, EdgeProp); school details come from the schools themselves. We cross-check regulated figures against reputable secondary sources (e.g. PwC, EY, The Edge) before publishing.
  • Everything is dated. Regulated figures carry a “figures verified” stamp and are re-checked on a schedule — because MM2H rules, fees and prices change. We say when something was last reviewed rather than implying it is timeless.
  • Independent, not commission-led. We take no fee from schools or developers, so our guidance isn’t pay-to-play, and we will say plainly when something is overpriced or the wrong fit.
  • Hedged where it should be. Visa, tax and money topics are “your money / your life” subjects. We flag uncertainty, point to the official source, and tell readers to confirm their own position with a qualified professional rather than overstate certainty.

Our primary sources

Where we rely on authoritative bodies, we name them: the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) and the Immigration Department for MM2H; the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) for tax; the National Property Information Centre (NAPIC), Brickz and EdgeProp for property; MDEC for DE Rantau; and individual schools and hospitals for fees and services. Regulated figures are cross-checked against major professional-services and news sources.

Corrections & updates

Rules in this space change, and we’d rather be corrected than wrong. If you spot a figure that’s out of date or inaccurate, tell us via our contact page and we’ll review and update it, refreshing the “last verified” date on the affected page.

Who writes our guides

Marcus Tan is the byline for the ExpatMove editorial team — the researchers and advisors behind our guides on MM2H, neighbourhoods, schooling and property across Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Johor. Every figure is checked against primary sources (MOTAC, NAPIC, LHDN and school/registry data) and dated, and the advice you act on is confirmed live on a call with ExpatMove's principal advisor.

More on the team and our approach on the about page. The advice you act on is confirmed live with our principal advisor on a call.

For journalists & researchers

We’re glad to be a source. We can provide expert commentary and dated, sourced figures on MM2H and Malaysia relocation — visa tiers and changes, cost-of-living, international-school fees, neighbourhoods and the practicalities of moving from specific countries.

  • Media & partnership enquiries: contact us — we aim to respond to journalist deadlines quickly.
  • Citing us: please attribute to “ExpatMove” with a link to the specific page you’re drawing on. Our figures are dated on each page so you can cite the verification date.
  • Data & tools: our cost-of-living and MM2H eligibility tools, and our by-nationality guidance, are good starting points for data-led stories.

ExpatMove is not a licensed immigration agent or financial advisor. All content is informational and reflects data verified as of its last-updated date — see our full disclaimer.
