Moving to Malaysia from Canada

Moving from Canada means choosing a visa (usually MM2H or DE Rantau), sorting money and banking, deciding where to live, and planning tax — with two Canada-specific catches: the departure tax (a deemed disposition of certain assets) and how OAS/CPP travel. Here's the whole journey, in order.

The short version

Why people move from Canada to Malaysia

Trade the winters for year-round warmth, at a fraction of the cost, with world-class affordable healthcare and an easy English-speaking landing. We make the full case on our MM2H for Canadians guide.

Step by step

The relocation journey, in order

01

Choose your visa

For most movers from Canada it's MM2H (a long, renewable base) or DE Rantau (remote workers). The full Canada-specific breakdown — tiers, the money side and the catches — is on our MM2H for Canadians page.

Handle the logistics

Shipping or replacing your home, your pet, your driving licence and document legalisation — the Canada-specific practicalities are below.

Canada practicalities

The one to plan first

Departure tax and how OAS/CPP travel

When you cease Canadian tax residency, the CRA treats you as having disposed of certain assets at fair market value — the 'departure tax' — which can trigger capital gains on the way out. Separately, OAS and CPP are generally payable abroad but with conditions (OAS in particular depends on your years of Canadian residence). Both are manageable with planning; neither blocks the move. Speak to a Canadian cross-border adviser before you set a departure date.

The Canada-specific bits

Shipping, pets, licence & documents

Shipping your home

Sea freight from Canada to Port Klang is a long haul; many movers ship a part-load and rebuy furniture and electronics locally, where they are cheaper.

Bringing pets

Requires an import permit from Malaysia's Department of Veterinary Services (DVS), microchipping, up-to-date vaccinations and the right paperwork. Quarantine requirements depend on your country's rabies category — confirm the current DVS rules and start months ahead.

Driving licence

Drive short-term on a Canadian licence with an International Driving Permit; a Canadian licence can generally be converted via JPJ. Confirm the current process.

Document legalisation

Canada joined the Hague Apostille Convention in 2024, so Canadian documents can now generally be apostilled (by Global Affairs Canada or the relevant province) for use in Malaysia. Confirm the current requirement per document.

Flights & time zone

There are no nonstop Canada–KL flights; expect one stop and ~18–22 hours total. Malaysia is UTC+8 — 12–16 hours ahead of Canada.

Community

Canadians fold into the broad expat communities around Mont Kiara and KLCC in KL and on Penang island.

Timeline & budget

How long does it take — and what does the move cost?

How long it takes

Plan on 3–6 months end to end. A realistic order:

  • Months 1–2: decide the visa, budget, and a shortlist of areas
  • Months 2–4: MM2H application + fixed deposit; bank and property
  • Months 3–5: shipping, pets, schools, and notifying home-country bodies
  • Months 5–6: fly out, settle in, finalise the local account

Indicative — MM2H processing times vary, so start the visa early.

What the move itself costs

Separate from living costs — the one-off move (indicative, for a couple):

  • Sea-freight shipping (part-load to full container): ~CAD 5,000–14,000
  • One-way flights, per person: ~CAD 900–1,800
  • Pet relocation, per pet all-in: ~CAD 3,500–7,000
  • MM2H agent & application fees: see the MM2H guide
  • Plus the refundable fixed deposit — your capital, not a cost

Indicative ranges; many movers ship light and rebuy locally. Size living costs with the cost-of-living comparison.

Before you fly

The Canada → Malaysia pre-departure checklist

The Malaysia side (everyone)

  • · Book shipping and set up bridging funds (Wise / local e-wallet)

The Canada side (Canada-specific)

  • · Model the departure tax (deemed disposition) with a cross-border adviser
  • · Confirm OAS/CPP portability with Service Canada
  • · File as an emigrant with the CRA in your departure year
  • · Decide what to do with RRSP/TFSA before leaving

Common questions

Moving from Canada: FAQ

What is the Canadian departure tax?

When you cease Canadian tax residency, the CRA deems you to have sold certain assets at fair market value, which can trigger capital gains tax 'on departure' even though you haven't actually sold. Some assets are excluded. Model it with a cross-border adviser before setting your departure date.

Can I still receive OAS and CPP in Malaysia?

Generally yes — both can be paid abroad, but OAS in particular depends on your years of Canadian residence, and conditions apply. Confirm your entitlement with Service Canada before you move.

Can I bring my pet from Canada to Malaysia?

Requires an import permit from Malaysia's Department of Veterinary Services (DVS), microchipping, up-to-date vaccinations and the right paperwork. Quarantine requirements depend on your country's rabies category — confirm the current DVS rules and start months ahead.

How long does the move take?

Plan on roughly 3–6 months end to end — visa and budget first, then the MM2H application and fixed deposit, then shipping/pets/schools, then fly out. Start the visa early.

Can I use my Canadian driving licence in Malaysia?

Short-term with an International Driving Permit; longer term a Canadian licence can generally be converted via JPJ. Confirm the current process.
