Moving to Malaysia from India

Moving from India means choosing a visa (usually MM2H or DE Rantau), sorting money and banking, deciding where to live, and planning around the LRS forex limit — the one India-specific item that shapes how you fund the move. Malaysia is a short flight away with a large Indian-Malaysian community. Here's the journey, in order.

The short version

Why people move from India to Malaysia

A culturally familiar base next door — a large Indian-Malaysian community, Tamil widely spoken, direct flights of under six hours, lower cost of living than India's metros for an equivalent lifestyle, and strong English-medium schools. We make the full case on our MM2H for Indians guide.

Step by step

The relocation journey, in order

01

Choose your visa

For most movers from India it's MM2H (a long, renewable base) or DE Rantau (remote workers). The full India-specific breakdown — tiers, the money side and the catches — is on our MM2H for Indians page.

Handle the logistics

Shipping or replacing your home, your pet, your driving licence and document legalisation — the India-specific practicalities are below.

India practicalities

The one to plan first

The LRS forex limit shapes how you fund the move

Under the RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS), a resident individual can remit up to USD 250,000 per financial year abroad. The MM2H Silver-tier deposit can sit within that in a single year, but higher tiers and the property purchase may need remittances spread across financial years or pooled across family members — and TCS (tax collected at source) applies on LRS remittances above the threshold. Plan the remittance timeline before you start the visa. Speak to a chartered accountant familiar with cross-border moves.

The India-specific bits

Shipping, pets, licence & documents

Shipping your home

Sea freight from India to Port Klang typically runs a few weeks; many movers ship a part-load and rebuy furniture and electronics locally. Used household goods may attract Malaysian customs scrutiny — confirm the duty position.

Bringing pets

Requires an import permit from Malaysia's Department of Veterinary Services (DVS), microchipping, up-to-date vaccinations and the right paperwork. Quarantine requirements depend on your country's rabies category — confirm the current DVS rules and start months ahead.

Driving licence

Drive short-term on an Indian licence with an International Driving Permit; an Indian licence can generally be converted via JPJ. Confirm the current process.

Document legalisation

India is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, so documents (birth, marriage, police clearance) can be apostilled (via MEA-authorised channels) for use in Malaysia. Confirm the current requirement per document.

Flights & time zone

Direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bengaluru to Kuala Lumpur run roughly 4.5–5.5 hours. Malaysia is UTC+8 — 2.5 hours ahead of India.

Community

Malaysia has a large, long-established Indian community (around 7% of the population); Tamil is widely spoken, and areas like Brickfields (KL's Little India) make the cultural landing easy.

Timeline & budget

How long does it take — and what does the move cost?

How long it takes

Plan on 3–6 months end to end. A realistic order:

  • Months 1–2: decide the visa, budget, and a shortlist of areas
  • Months 2–4: MM2H application + fixed deposit; bank and property
  • Months 3–5: shipping, pets, schools, and notifying home-country bodies
  • Months 5–6: fly out, settle in, finalise the local account

Indicative — MM2H processing times vary, so start the visa early.

What the move itself costs

Separate from living costs — the one-off move (indicative, for a couple):

  • Sea-freight shipping (part-load to full container): ~USD 2,500–8,000
  • One-way flights, per person: ~USD 150–400
  • Pet relocation, per pet all-in: ~USD 2,000–4,000
  • MM2H agent & application fees: see the MM2H guide
  • Plus the refundable fixed deposit — your capital, not a cost

Indicative ranges; many movers ship light and rebuy locally. Size living costs with the cost-of-living comparison.

Before you fly

Common questions

Moving from India: FAQ

How do I move money from India for the MM2H deposit?

Under the RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme you can remit up to USD 250,000 per financial year. The Silver-tier deposit can fit in one year; higher tiers and the property may need remittances spread across years or pooled across family members, and TCS applies above the threshold. Plan the timeline with a chartered accountant.

Will I be taxed in both India and Malaysia?

India and Malaysia have a tax treaty, and Malaysia exempts most remitted foreign income. As you transition to non-resident (via RNOR) your Indian tax exposure changes. Confirm the specifics with a CA familiar with cross-border moves.

Can I bring my pet from India to Malaysia?

Requires an import permit from Malaysia's Department of Veterinary Services (DVS), microchipping, up-to-date vaccinations and the right paperwork. Quarantine requirements depend on your country's rabies category — confirm the current DVS rules and start months ahead.

Is there a big Indian community in Malaysia?

Yes — Indians are around 7% of Malaysia's population, Tamil is widely spoken, and there are long-established communities and areas such as Brickfields in KL. It is one of the most culturally familiar destinations for Indian movers.

Can I use my Indian driving licence in Malaysia?

Short-term with an International Driving Permit; longer term an Indian licence can generally be converted via JPJ. Confirm the current process.
