Fees & admissions, explained honestly

Tuition is only part of the cost, and the hardest part is often timing — places at the best schools fill up. Here's what to budget and when to act.

Tuition rises with year level

Across established Malaysian international schools, indicative annual tuition runs roughly RM 30,000–55,000 in early years and primary, RM 50,000–75,000 in middle school, and RM 70,000–145,000 at IB Diploma / Sixth Form. Penang and Johor tend to sit below KL's premium schools. Treat all figures as ranges that schools revise every year.

The one-off and extra costs people forget

  • Application / registration fee — typically a few hundred to a couple of thousand ringgit, often non-refundable.
  • Refundable deposit — commonly one term's fees, returned when your child leaves.
  • Building / capital / enrolment fund — a one-time charge, roughly RM 10,000–30,000 at some schools.
  • Annual facility or resource fee — around RM 3,000–8,000.
  • Transport — bus fees roughly RM 8,000–18,000/year, distance-dependent.
  • Extras — uniforms, devices, trips, exam fees and after-school activities.

The admissions timeline (apply earlier than you think)

The biggest mistake families make is confirming a neighbourhood before confirming a school place. Popular schools — especially at entry points like Reception, Year 7 and the Diploma years — keep waitlists, and the specific year group you need may be full even when the school is 'open'. Begin enquiries months ahead, request a place in writing, and have assessment reports and past school records ready. Where possible, line up the school before signing a lease nearby.

Frequently asked questions

As a rough planning figure, total the tuition for the right year level plus 10–20% for facility fees, transport and extras, and a one-off allowance for the application fee, refundable deposit and any building fund. Always confirm the exact schedule with the school.

Ideally several months before your move, and before you commit to a neighbourhood. Check availability for your child's specific year group, not just whether the school is accepting applications generally.
