MM2H timeline: how long does it actually take?
From first decision to moving in — the realistic, end-to-end timeline. No agent publishes this because the answer is “it depends.” Here’s what it depends on.

Timeline by tier
These are realistic ranges based on published processing windows and applicant experience. Your actual timeline depends on nationality (police clearance speed), document completeness, and MOTAC workload.

The full journey, in order
Pre-application preparation
4–12 weeksStart this before you engage an agent. These items run in parallel and determine your real start date:
- Police clearance: 2 days (Australia) to 6+ months (South Africa). Need one from every country you’ve lived in 12+ months in the past 5 years. See our nationality processing guide.
- Forex planning: Most countries — days. China (USD 50K/year cap) — 12–18 months for Gold/Platinum. India (LRS USD 250K/year) — may need 2 years for Gold.
- Document gathering: Passport, bank statements, medical report. 2–4 weeks if straightforward.
- Research: Shortlist your tier, preferred city, school options if applicable. This is the time to do recce trips.
Engage a licensed MM2H agent
2–4 weeksAll MM2H applications must go through a MOTAC-licensed agent — individual or walk-in applications are not accepted. Your agent reviews your documents, advises on tier selection, and prepares the submission.
Not sure how to choose an agent? See our guide to choosing an MM2H agent, or ask us for a recommendation.
Application submission
1–2 weeksYour agent submits the complete file to the One Stop Centre MM2H (OSC MM2H) in Putrajaya. Incomplete files are the single biggest cause of delay — a good agent catches gaps before submission.
MOTAC review & processing
10–24 weeksThe authorities review your application. This is the longest wait and the phase you cannot speed up. Typical ranges by tier:
- Silver: 10–18 weeks
- Gold: 12–20 weeks
- Platinum: 12–24 weeks
- SEZ/Johor: 8–16 weeks
Your agent can check status with MOTAC but cannot influence the timeline. Use this period to plan your move — housing research, school applications, shipping quotes.
Conditional approval letter
1–2 weeksMOTAC issues a conditional approval letter. This is your green light — but it comes with a deadline. You typically have approximately 6 months to complete the post-approval steps and enter Malaysia for endorsement.
Post-approval: fixed deposit, insurance & medical
2–6 weeksSeveral things happen in parallel after conditional approval:
- Fixed deposit: Place the deposit in an approved Malaysian bank. Your agent coordinates with the bank. The bank issues a placement letter for MOTAC.
- Medical insurance: Required for applicants aged 60 and below. Must be from a Malaysian or foreign insurer with coverage valid in Malaysia.
- Medical check-up: At a clinic or hospital appointed by MOTAC, for the principal and all dependants.
- Security bond: A personal bond stamped at the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) for RM 10.
Visa endorsement
1–2 weeksEnter Malaysia and attend the endorsement appointment. Your agent submits all post-approval documents to MOTAC, and the Immigration Department endorses your pass. You are now an MM2H participant.
Government fees at this stage: processing fee (RM 5,000 principal / RM 2,500 per dependant), participation fee (RM 1,000 Silver / RM 3,000 Gold / RM 200,000 Platinum), and pass fee (RM 500/year).
Move in & settle
OngoingOpen a bank account, set up utilities, convert your driving licence, enrol children in school. Most expats need 2–4 weeks for essentials. See our relocation checklist for the full month-by-month plan.
Avoid delays
The five most common causes of delay
Incomplete submission
Missing or expired documents force a resubmission and restart the processing clock. A thorough agent catches these before filing.
Late police clearance
South African applicants routinely wait 3–6 months for SAPS clearance. Start your PCC the moment you decide to apply — don't wait for an agent.
Forex delays
Chinese applicants with Gold/Platinum-tier deposits need 12–18 months of forex planning under the USD 50K annual quota. Start this before everything else.
Choosing the wrong agent
An unlicensed or inexperienced agent can file an incomplete application, miss deadlines, or give incorrect advice that costs months. Verify their MOTAC licence before signing.
Missing the post-approval window
After conditional approval, you have approximately 6 months to complete endorsement. Delays in placing the fixed deposit, arranging insurance, or booking the medical can eat this window.
Use the wait
What to do during MOTAC processing
The 3–6 month MOTAC processing window is dead time if you let it be — or a head start if you use it. Here’s what to action while you wait:

FAQ
Timeline questions
How long does MM2H take from start to finish?
Plan for 5–9 months from agent engagement to visa endorsement. Add 1–3 months of pre-application prep (police clearance, document gathering, forex planning) and you're looking at 6–12 months total. Silver tier tends to be fastest; Platinum takes longest.
What is the longest lead-time item in the MM2H process?
For most applicants, MOTAC processing (3–6 months) is the longest wait. But for some nationalities, police clearance (up to 6 months for South African applicants) or forex planning (12–18 months for Chinese Gold/Platinum applicants) can be longer. Start these before engaging an agent.
Can I speed up the MM2H application?
You can't speed up MOTAC processing, but you can avoid delays: submit a complete file (incomplete submissions are the biggest cause of delay), get your police clearance early, have your funds ready to transfer, and use an experienced agent who knows the current requirements.
What happens after conditional approval?
You have approximately 6 months to complete the post-approval steps: place the fixed deposit in a Malaysian bank, obtain medical insurance (if aged 60 and below), complete a medical check-up at a MOTAC-appointed clinic, execute the security bond, and enter Malaysia for visa endorsement.
Can I visit Malaysia while my MM2H application is being processed?
Yes. You can visit on a normal tourist visa (90 days for most nationalities) while your application is in progress. Some applicants use this time for recce trips — viewing properties, visiting schools, and exploring neighbourhoods.
